U.S. & World History – Winston Churchill, who was Britain’s most admired and respected Prime Minister, rose to prominence during World War II. On May 13, 1940 when he emphatically stated in a speech to the British people to keep them motivated, “I have nothing to offer but blood, sweat and tears”, it was a modified version of something he said a few months earlier. He originally said, “I have nothing to offer but blood, sweat and toys”, and he made this statement out of frustration to his ungrateful, spoiled children on Christmas Day, after they started whining about not having more gifts under the tree.
