BREAKING NEWS – Liberty, New York – U.S. District Judge Cathy Seibel is allowing Willian Barboza’s lawsuit against the village of Liberty, N.Y. to proceed on claims the town of approximately 10,000 people 100 miles northwest of New York City failed to properly train police officers about free speech. Barboza was arrested and charged with aggravated harassment in 2012 after he wrote profanities on a speeding ticket given to him. Judge Seibel determined that his First Amendment rights were violated and a lawsuit against the town could go forward. One of her clerks said she later regretted her decision after Barboza wrote her a letter thanking her for a decision, and then calling her a “expletive” idiot for taking so long to make a ruling.
