Dear Blake,

I lost a friend about two months ago. During the early morning hour of his death, I was having breakfast alone, and I had the light on in my dining room. All of a sudden, the light went out and then came back on. The only power that went out was the light over my head. I am a science person. I do not believe in mystical things. Now I am not so sure my friend wasn’t communicating with me. I cried. What do you think?

Dear Sharon,

First of all, sorry for your loss. It could be a number of reasons why the lights briefly went out, ranging from the probable to the outright creepy. Here are some possibilities. If he lead a wretched ungodly life, he could’ve been signaling to you that he has been tossed in outer darkness as referenced in the bible, and he can’t see anything, but can only hear people screaming. Or he could be literally in hell, and he was trying to describe to you how bright the flames are. It’s even possible, he was trying to say that you never “saw the light”, because you were trying to push him into a romantic relationship, and he wanted you to know that he’d rather die than date you on a regular basis. But maybe the explanation is scientific. It could be something as simple as a spontaneous shortage… prompted by his ghost dabbling with some breakers, in hopes to figure out a way to electrocute you, in dealing with all suppressed hostility he has had against you over the years. I personally think he should be more compassionate and use a lightning bolt from a cloud because they kill painlessly, because the high voltage will quickly fry you from the inside. I hope this helps.

Blake
