The Academy defended the addition by explaining that “It’s about time that the use of mind altering substances got credit for the creation of countless memorable roles, so the performer can be honored and recognized before their untimely headline grabbing early death”. The newest category was so well received, that they are now considering adding one specifically for teens that regularly smoke marijuana in the 2015 Academy Awards.
