Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., called for a federal minimum wage of $20 per hour at an event in Detroit, prompting mockery from conservatives and threatening to force mainline Democrats in the 2020 presidential race to address the issue in upcoming debates. Tlaib’s comment came during remarks to the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Michigan and the labor rights group One Fair Wage. “Actually $20 per hour is not even close to enough, when in reality, it should be at least twice that,” stated Tlaib. “It should be raised to a number where people won’t be deprived of achieving their goals, like buying a custom built home or paying cash for a new foreign sports car every year. I even feel that my staffers should make as much money as I make annually, which will likely finally stop them from constantly saying behind my back, that I am legally insane.”
