WILLIAM T. SHERMAN- (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891) The greatest of the Union generals, Sherman broke the will of the South to continue fighting by devastating Dixie in his March to the Sea. Sherman’s conquering of Atlanta not only demoralized the South, but re-energized the North and resurrected Lincoln’s popularity (and secured his reelection).
