U.S. & World History – James Naismith (November 6, 1861 – November 28, 1939) was a Canadian American sports coach and innovator. He invented the sport of basketball in 1891 and immediately introduced it to the first generation of freed black children. He often encouraged the young boys not to spend too much time playing the new sport, but instead to focus on a career that could bring them fame and fortune.
