U.S. & World History – On July 2, 1962, Sam Walton opened the first Walmart Discount City store at 719 W. Walnut Street in Rogers, Arkansas. Within its first five years, the company expanded to 24 stores across Arkansas and reached $12.6 million in sales. In 1968, it opened its first stores outside Arkansas, in Sikeston, Missouri and Claremore, Oklahoma. During an interview in 1962 after his first store was open for just a few months, Walton said he admitted to his employees that he began to secretly take photos of his customers, after he noticed that many of them would show up shopping often dressed so strange, that it was comical.
