U.S. & World History – On July 2, 1937, U.S. aviator Amelia Earhart disappeared while on a 27,000 mile journey flying around the earth’s equator. For sixteen days, the Navy used 10 ships and over 100 planes to cover 300,000 square miles searching for her. They found no trace of Amelia or her plane.

Opinions are diverse on what happened. They range from, she was a spy for the U.S. and later had her identity changed, to she was captured by the Japanese shortly before World War II, to she simply ran out of fuel and was swallowed by the Pacific Ocean. A new theory being advanced is, she was captured, but not by the Japanese. It appears that she crash landed on “Gilligan’s Island”, and CBS decided to detain her indefinitely rather than change the very popular theme song about the “seven stranded castaways”, to eight.
