Dear Blake,

I am twenty-four years old and married. I have discussed the problem I have been experiencing with my husband, but he thinks that I am being irrational. I have recently acquired a fear of darkness. I cannot leave our bedroom door open at night, for I fear that I may find someone lurking in the hallway. I’ve been having trouble sleeping at night due to this fear of mine. I wake up and can’t fall back to sleep because I feel overwhelmed with fear. I wonder if this is the result of watching crazy horror movies. I am tired of feeling this way and have analyzed this situation as far as I can. I would appreciate any feedback on my problem.

Signed, Thelma

Dear Thelma,

The fear of darkness happens often with children, and it’s even common with adults. It’s irrational if there are no monsters, creatures, or crazy humans out to get you, but in your case I think they are, and you should be very afraid. Locking your bedroom door is not a bad idea, but what about the evil creatures that’s in your closet? I read somewhere that some monsters actually wait under beds at night, and once they hearing snoring, they pounce! If you ever saw the movie “Alien”, you’d be aware that something can be growing inside you right now, even as you read this letter. And it’s just a matter of time before it gets big enough to exit your body causing your chest to implode. However, your biggest concern should be the man laying next to you at night that you “assume” is your husband. I strongly urge you to rent the movie “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” so you can start making informed decisions when he snuggles next to you… with a devious smirk. On the other hand, I could be wrong about everything. But to play it safe, as soon as you both get into bed at night, call a close friend or family member every 15 minutes until sunrise, to let them know you’re still alive. It also wouldn’t hurt if you had on speed dial, 911 and Ghostbusters. I hope this helps.

Blake
