BREAKING NEWS – New York City, New York – Allure Magazine ticked off some readers with their August spread “You (Yes, You) Can Have An Afro,” showcasing a white actress with a ’70s-style afro hairstyle, with no mention of its origins. The afro has held political significance for the African-American community since the 1970s when it was part of the “Black is Beautiful” movement protesting white beauty standards usually featuring straight hair. Al Sharpton called the article “racially insensitive” and that “it was mocking ‘our’ culture”. When the civil rights activist was asked what about all the black women that wear wigs with straight hair which is more synonymous with white women, he stammered while responding and said, “Uh… what goes on in our culture is our business, and I… uh, refuse to reveal the mindset of women in the African-American community to a bunch of nosy Caucasians!”
