Not only were they slave owners, they owned slaves that were relatives of former First Lady Michelle Obama. Cornelius Vanderbilt, the great great grandfather of Anderson Cooper owned slaves, who picked cotton that would be sent north to New England. Cooper finally responded to his checkered family history. “Yes, Cornelius Vanderbilt owned slaves, but I’m sure he was a decent and honorable man that treated them respectfully, because I have no doubt that they were his prized possessions.”
