BREAKING NEWS – Norfolk, Virginia – A Democrat running for a U.S. House seat in Virginia has been indicted on charges of fraud, embezzlement and theft in connection with events that allegedly occurred in 2012. Shaun Brown, 58, appeared in a Norfolk courtroom and denied any wrongdoing. Prosecutors said Brown received about $803,000 via her nonprofit organization as a participant in a U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which ensures that low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. They alleged that she acquired funds by filing false reimbursement claims with the Virginia Department of Health. In her first court appearance, she blamed the the prosecutors for being insensitive. “Those lawyers are very heartless,” Brown told the judge while pointing at the prosecutors. “Because they are forcing me to steal even more money from the SFSP to pay my legal fees, and that will cause a lot of children to go to bed hungry!”
