I have a friend of mine who has a hummingbird feeder that she fills with sugar water regularly. I have repeatedly told her to get rid of it, after explaining that the tiny wild birds don’t need humans to survive. Then I emphasized that if she continues, they will become so dependent on her, that they might even start making demands… and I have now been proven right! Last week when she ran out of sugar and she didn’t feel like going to the store, she used syrup instead. Big mistake. Within one day, the amount of birds using the feeder tripled, and by the second day of her using syrup, they left a note demanding pancakes. Apparently she agrees with me, because she now refers to the hummingbirds as “a bunch of fast flapping flying freeloaders”. What the…
