U.S. & World History – Gov. George Wallace blocks the entrance to the University of Alabama as he turned back a federal officer attempting to enroll two black students at the university campus in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on June 11, 1963. Even though he eventually stepped aside to allow the students to enter the school, Wallace was overheard telling one of his aides that, “These people may excel academically here, but I am comfortable knowing that because whites are physically superior, blacks will never be better than us in any sport”.
