U.S. & World History – Homer who lived around 850 B.C., was believed by the ancient Greeks to have been the first and greatest of the epic poets. He is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. His importance to the ancient Greeks is described in Plato’s Republic, which portrays him as “first teacher”, of the tragedians, and the “leader of Greek culture”. But he was best known during his time period as an incredible athlete. More specifically, Homer was the first person ever to hit a baseball so far, that he ran around all four bases before the opposing team had the opportunity to throw him out.
