U.S. & World History – A very little known fact, is a method to defend a person’s honor, was the inspiration of a very popular tv game show. On the morning of July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr raised their pistols and took aim. Hamilton, the former secretary of the treasury, and Vice President Burr were longstanding political rivals and personal enemies. Burr might have been the president instead of vice president, had it not been for Hamilton’s interference, and he retaliated by instigating the showdown. Hamilton was shot and he died the next day. Supporters of Burr who were happy that he won, offered him some cash and prizes, but he had to make a selection between one of three curtains, and he couldn’t see what was behind them. The concept became even more popular over the years after the weapons were eliminated. The title was eventually changed, but the original title of the Hamilton/Burr gunfight was called, “Let’s Make a Duel”.
