Dear Blake,

I have been happily married to my husband for five years. When we married, money was tight, so we agreed to use temporary wedding rings and upgrade to our final official set later. Well, we finally did it, and my ring is what I always wanted. It is stunning.

The problem: When friends and family (and sometimes even strangers!) compliment me on my ring, it is often accompanied with, “Can I try it on?” or more forcibly, “Let me try that on!” I would never ask to try on something so precious to someone else, and I never want to see someone else wearing my wedding rings. Why do women do this and how can I politely tell them “NO WAY”?

Signed, Debra

Dear Debra,

I’m happy for you and your husband into finally getting your wedding rings. How you should react to someone making such an outlandish request, should be based on what you determine is their level of idiocy. So, here are some ideas. Tell them that the jeweler you bought it from, said if you allow anyone to wear your ring, it would void your warranty. And then add you will let them try it on anyway if they agree to pay $325.00 to cover your losses. Or, inform them that you are concerned if you let them try it on, they’ll become even more desperate to find someone that can stomach them, and you don’t want to indirectly contribute to their current emotional instability. Or maybe saying that you are waiting on tests results from your doctor, to determine how contagious your rare finger disease is. How about saying your husband stole the ring, and you want them to try it on, because with more fingerprints and DNA on it, you can allege that one of them stole it, and that’ll help keep your husband out of prison. And this last idea. Compliment them on how good they look in their pants or dress, and you’d like to try on whichever one they are wearing on the spot, even if you both are in the public. If she is stupid enough to do that, once she has removed the garment, tell her that you just remembered that you don’t have any shoes that matches whatever she is handing you, and casually strut away, while laughing onlookers focus their camera phones on her, and then uploading the footage on social media. I hope this helps.

Blake
